CHI SAO
The actual use of Wing Chun techniques and ideas embodied in
the thre empty handed forms and wooden dummy form are developed
in chi sao, a close quarters sparring exercise that starts with
the arms in contact, joined in a fluid rolling motion. Two students
probe each others defenses and, sensing an opportunity, one will
attack, forcing the other to defend and counter.
Perhaps unlike any other martial exercise, chi sao develops the
principle of attack and defense, refining a student's ability
to transition smoothly between both.
There are four things one should learn in chi sao, the four cornerstones
of
effective fighting:
· technique
· reflex
· energy
· position
In building these four attributes, chi sao becomes the link between
form and exercise and fighting.
